Day twelve - a day of mixed emotion

Today was supposed to be one of the best of the trip, it is in a way. We left Tallinn this morning and drove along the coast to Paldiski. This was a complete city built by the Russian government to house their nuclear submarines including two land based processing plants. Estonians were not allowed on to the peninsular. When they handed Estonia back to the Estonians, they left in a bit of a hurry, and abandoned the peninsular, gradually it is being reclaimed but a lot of the peninsular has derelict buildings and abandoned works, and has a lot of dirt tracks.

Having driven around the tracks we came across the Estonian holocaust monument at Klooga, this is where the occupying Germans slaughtered 2000 Jewish prisoners in the concentration camp when they realised they Russians were liberating Estonia. Very moving and sad to read of the persecution during that time.

We continued along the coast to Parnu which we had understood was the Estonian equivalent of the south of France. Well we can tell you it's not! Quite industrial and while it does have a lovely beach, it doesn't cater for caravans or tents at all well.

Feeling quite disappointed we continued down the coast towards Latvia following the old coast road which was particularly beautiful, we saw a sign advertising camping and after driving for about a mile towards the sea came across a lovely hotel where the campsite is on their front lawn on the edge of the sea, so here we are, into Latvia tomorrow.

 Our campsite for the night.

And finally today's selfie in the bar after a long day.
