Day Four

First day on enforced idleness so what do we do, we go across the island looking for Geocaches and walk for miles. But is this island beautiful? It most definitely is and we have found some real gems of places. We took route three out of Mariehamn (there are only four routes) and drove as far as we could without falling into the Baltic Sea, that's only 29 km so it shows how small this island is.

Day four selfie with the Baltic Sea in the background, this was taken during our find of the third cache of the day at the Lemstroms Kanal, its a short hand dug canal that was built to allow trade ships an easier route to Russia so it became as competitive for the islands to trade with them as much as with Sweden.

The Lemstroms Kanal a really beautiful place, and an important part of the islands history

The view when we stopped for lunch

Another beautiful cove we came across today, the island is just a water enthusiast dream, i'm just wishing I had the Camel Rib with me. We competed over twenty Geocaches today, and one of the last before heading back to Mariehamn was located at a lovely little chapel built for the seafarers in the 1700's which over time had become derelict before they built a new roof to protect what was left. We had to walk about a mile to get to it and climb 1000 meters for the last bit but it was worth it. Then it was a 2000 meter descent to the sea to look at the old harbour.

Taken at the old harbour, with one of the old flat bottom fishing boats in the background, then back up the cliff to the Camel.
