Day five - out to the forts

The day began with a decision to go towards Sund, this involved following another of the main routes out of Marriehamn this time route 2, heading out towards Bomarsund Fortress ruins. Of course this also gave us a chance to search for more geocaches, and discover some more lovely places on the island.

Bomarsund Fortress ruins. This series of fortresses built and planned to be built by the Russians are impressive covering the whole of a peninsular. Unfortunately for the Russians the English and French smashed most of them before they could be completed. Although the battle was a success and only 21 French soldiers died in the war 564 died as a result of a cholera outbreak in the camp.

The impact of the shells can still be clearly seen.

Farmhouse at the Jan Karlsgarden open air museum. This is fantastic living museum of country life on the islands, with a mix of historical skills and buildings on display. Truly inspiring when you appreciate the difficulties faced in the winter months when everything is frozen over and covered in snow

The traditional mid summer poles decorated to encourage the best opportunities of a good harvest.

Kastleholm Castle, the only medieval castle on Aland it's impressive inside as well.

One of the many bridges linking islands together, this one linking Bomarsund with Prasto, and finally the selfie from day five, you can tell it was strong sun by the way we are squinting at the Castle.
